More about The Olive Branch for Children
Since its establishment in 2005, The Olive Branch has been extremely active in the Mbeya region of Tanzania. In 2006-7, The Olive Branch financed and supervised the construction of a new dormitory at the Iwambi Orphanage to enable it to accept and house more children. The Olive Branch for Children opened the &147ZION/HIV House&148 in May, 2006 in Mbeya to house and assist young children who have been born with the HIV Virus. This home houses 8 children between the ages of 2 and 10. A full-time nurse from the community is in charge of the house and 3 other local women help with necessary chores and activities in or related to the HIV home.
The Olive Branch also has financed and managed the construction of a new kitchen and dining hall for the Iwambi Orphanage. That facility requires some finishing touches but is in operation at this time. Donors to The Olive Branch have sponsored forty-two orphans
who live in Olive Branch managed and operated facilities. Further, the charity sponsors five children from the orphanage in their higher education – two in university and three attending Teachers College. Those 5 students have undertaken to return to Mbeya and assist in the charity’s works there. The Olive Branch has put in place a scholarship fund to assist older orphans who show substantial academic ability. That fund will enable those students to continue their education at the university, or at the applied training college, level. The Olive Branch started and operates a pre-kindergarten Montessori school which it staffs with teachers who have been trained by Canadian volunteers with extensive Montessori teaching experience. The charity is conducting training in sewing and other crafts for orphans who do not excel academically.
The Olive Branch also hosts monthly mobile medical clinics in the region helping over 10,000 villagers and in the early summer of 2008, constructed, equipped and is staffing a permanent medical clinic at the Orphanage facility that will serve a catchment of approximately 20,000 residents. The Olive Branch for Children has started a pilot irrigation project in the Mahongo area to assist residents of that area to achieve self-sufficiency in their food supply.
The Olive Branch for Children is a not-for-profit corporation, without share capital, incorporated in 2005 under the Corporations Act (Ontario) for charitable purposes and is a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency.
