TWENTY hardy souls will plunge into the cold waters of the Clyde today for the annual Kilcreggan to Greenock swim.
They have all undergone tests to make sure they can cover the two-mile distance and are raising money for charities. The event is organised by Gourock Amateur Swimming Club and supported by the Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club, which provides canoes to escort the swimmers. Inverclyde Leisure general manager David McCorkindale, inset, a keen runner, cyclist and swimmer who last weekend came in third – for the third time – at the Inverclyde Triathlon, is taking part in the swim for the first time. He said: “I’ve always thought, living beside the river, that I would like to swim across it. Now I’m actually going to do it.” David, a member of Greenock Glenpark Harriers, said swimming in the river presents different challenges to being in a pool. He said: “I’ll be wearing a wetsuit to try to ward off cramp and jelly fish.” David praised John and Esther Hanna, of Gourock Amateur Swimming Club, for putting the competitors through their paces during training sessions off the Esplanade. The swimmers will meet at the Royal West at 1pm today to be taken by boat to Kilcreggan. They hope to start back at about 2.30pm.
