The Alcona resident will be participating in the fourday, 800 kilometre Tour For Kids bicycling fundraiser, which runs between Markham and Haliburton, beginning Thursday.
Hundreds of riders are expected to participate in the sixth annual event — which is organized by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation — raising about $1 million for children’s cancer camps across the province. “They raise money for kids cancer camps across Ontario, like Camps Quality, Oochigeas and Trillium,” she said, during a fundraising barbecue outside the Alcona Sobeys Saturday afternoon. “Every $700 raised sends one kids to camp. “I’m hoping to make as much as I can. It’s been going really good I’ve found (fundraising) easier than in other years.” Over the last five years, the event has raised $4.5 million for the camps. “One-hundred per cent of the money goes to the charity,” said Pomeroy. “It gets kids away from their pain and suffering, and makes them forget about everything. There’s nurses and doctors on staff, so it allows them to get out and be kids for a week.” Pomeroy also rode in the event two years ago. She says it’s physically demanding, but well worth the effort, and has earned over $2,000 for the ride so far.
“I’m doing 50-kilometres this year, because I didn’t have the chance to train,” she said. “But the best part about this is you can ride five kilometres or 500, it’s all about the money for the kids. I’ve been affected by cancer I’ve lost my father, brother-inlaw and friends.”
