South Louisiana Center for the Arts presents the children’s musical, “Annie Jr.,” scheduled for 7 p.m.
May 29-30 and 2 p.m. May 31 at the H.L. Bourgeois High School auditorium, No. 1 Reservation Court, Gray. The show, directed by Pat Hornsby Crochet, features more than 40 SoLa students ranging in age from elementary-schoolers to high-schoolers in a performance that includes hit songs from the Broadway production “Annie.” Admission costs $10, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit SoLa Center for the Arts. The Bayou Playhouse, 101 Main St., Lockport, is showing favorite films by Glen Pitre and Michelle Benoit at 5 p.m. each Sunday through June 14 after the matinee performance of the play “Floating Palace.” Admission to the Sunday films costs $5. The film schedule: May 31, “Haunted Waters” and “Good For What Ails You” June 7, “The Scoundrel’s Wife” June 14, “The Man Who Came Back.” The first meeting of the Banned Books Club, a group formed to celebrate the right to free speech and intellectual freedom, is scheduled for 2 p.m. May 30 at the Thibodaux Branch Library, 314 St. Mary St. The Thibodaux library will hold a Banned Books Club meeting the last Saturday of each month. Members are asked to read a selected book that has been either banned or challenged and will meet not only to discuss the book, but also the circumstances behind the controversy. The program is free and open to the public. In Ya Face Fight Productions is scheduled to hold an MMA and boxing event May 30 at the Cut Off Youth Center, 205 W. 79th St. Martin Verdin and James Johnson III square off in the boxing main event. Courtney Pollard and Chase Cheramie lock up for the MMA main event. The event also includes Louisiana Cruiser Weight Champ Justin “Ironman” Verdin, Thomas Dardar, Casey Guidry, Marty Guidry, Royce Guidry and more. Storm Warning: Last Stand for America’s Wetland, an event drawing attention to Louisiana’s vulnerable wetlands, is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. May 31 at the Houma Downtown Marina. Vessels from south Louisiana will meet at the marina and raft up to form a flotilla demarcating the front line in the battle to save America’s Wetland. The event will feature live music by local celebrities, a boat parade, food, games and fun for the whole family on water and land. Admission is free and open to the public. For information, call 873-6428. The Bayou Blue Branch Library, 198 Mazerac St., will hold a summer kickoff featuring the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and McGruff at 10:30 a.m. June 1. The event includes finger printing, car-seat safety and more for parents and children. Lafourche Parish libraries are offering workshops in charcoal drawing, painting, photography and sculpture to children ages 8-12 and teens as part of the Library System’s summer-reading program. Registration for all workshops is required as space is limited. Registration begins Monday at all branches, with the exception of the Lockport Branch Library. Lockport residents can register for workshops from 2 to 5 p.m. June 2-4 at the Lockport Town Hall. All summer-reading activities for Lockport residents will be held in the town hall meeting room.
