Cycling Top cycle stars pedal into Toon

Get involved THE CREAM of British cycling are set to pedal into the North East once again.
They will compete in the Northern Rock Cyclone professional events over the weekend of Friday June 12 to Sunday June 14. The list of big hitters set to line up include Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy and British National Road Race Champion Rob Hayles, both of Team Halfords Bikehut, Russ Downing and Malcolm Elliott of Candi TV-Marshall’s Pasta, and current Olympic Medallist Chris Newton of Rapha Condor. Ed Clancy will be riding in both the Friday and Sunday Cyclone events &ndash the Leazes Criteriums and Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar Road Race &ndash alongside team mate and National Champion Rob Hayles, who scooped first place in last year’s Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar Race and is returning to re-stake his claim on the much coveted prize. Clancy, who won gold at the Beijing Olympics, is thrilled to be taking part in the Cyclone for the first time. He said: “While it will be my first Northern Rock Cyclone experience, I know that the rest of the team are really pleased to be returning to the North East.
“I heard great things following last year’s successful event and I’m more than happy to show my support for anything which promotes cycling as a sport for the wider community.”
