WELLAND — Staff at the Hope Centre are hoping to raise hunger awareness and support for their food bank, one pancake at a time.
The East Main St. agency will be hosting a charity breakfast Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in conjunction with National Hunger Awareness Day. Guests will enjoy a buffet-style meal, dished out by the Welland firefighters, that includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, coffee, juice and tea — all for $6. “It’s an excellent price,†said rural development office Jackie Marr, who has hopes the event will fill the centre’s dining room. Marr encourages local business to “bring their staff and give them a treat before work†on Tuesday. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Hope Pantry, the centre’s community food bank. Marr hopes the event will raise at least $1,000 to help stock continually emptying shelves. “Lots of people are hungry out there,†she said, adding many rely on food banks such as the one at the Hope Centre to survive.
Many people remember to donate around the holidays, she said, but in the summer they sometimes forget there are still people out there in need.
