JACKSONVILLE, FL — Henrik Stenson may have won The Players Championship this year but he wasn’t the only champ because of the event.
The winner of the Birdies for Charity was selected Friday and this year the honor goes to Joe Vella. Particpants are challenged to guess the number of “birdies” during The Players Championship and Vella was one of three people to guess within one birdie. The three names were entered into a drawing and Vella’s name was selected as the final winner.
Vella made a $2,000 personal pledge and also raised $8,425 in pledges with help from friends and family. The 2009 event as a whole raised more than $230,000.
