Raising Money By Playing Rockpaperscissors 2009: Scissors Students

Raising money by playing rockpaperscissors

Rock.
Paper. Scissors.
Students from across Moose Jaw in the Holy Trinity School Division chanted the three words during a rock/paper/scissors tournament held at Vanier Collegiate on Friday.
The tournament was held at the school to help raise money for women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Two years ago the event was held to raise money for wheelchairs for people in need in Africa.
“We ran this two years ago and it went off really well and kids have been asking about it, especially in the elementary grades, when we were going to do it again,” said Joe Buchko, a teacher at Vanier.
Buchko said he would like to see the tournament become an annual event.
Students from Sacred Heart, St. Agnes, St. Michael, St. Mary, St. Margaret Schools and Vanier Collegiate who participated in the round robin event all paid a two-dollar entry fee.
For the final competition at Vanier Friday, each grade from each school brought two contestants to compete for the best rock/paper/scissors player in Moose Jaw.
Danica Kindrachuk, a Grade 12 student from Vanier, was in charge of the tournament this year and it was her decision to raise money for the DRC.
“The DRC are in the middle of a civil war. It started after the Rwanda genocide spilled over into the DRC,” said Kindrachuk.
While watching 60 Minutes, Kindrachuk learned about the war in the DRC and how women were being treated.
“Many women are being raped to the point that they are mutilated,” said Kindrachuk.
Kindrachuk knew that her school had raised money for charities in the past and thought this would be something that would definitely be worthy of time and effort.
“I thought this (tournament) would be something fun, spunky and different,” said Kindrachuk.
Tallon Ruston, a Grade 9 student from Vanier, was the overall winner of the tournament and won $100.
Ruston said he had no real strategy to win the competition and just made random decisions during his play.
Vanier Collegiate is still accepting donations to the charity at the school.
