East Hampton Town School News 2009: Kindergarten Screening

East Hampton Town school news

A kindergarten screening will be held on Wednesday, May 27.
Residents of the Amagansett School District with children entering kindergarten, should contact Tina Goldsmith at 267-3572 to set up an appointment. The second and third graders have been enjoying their Painted Lady butterfly larva. They have been recording their observations and learning new facts about the process of metamorphosis. The children have also measured out the areas for the raised flower beds in the backyard garden. The students enjoyed their annual lunch with the Wainscott Sewing Society on Wednesday. This annual event is eagerly anticipated by the students and staff. The children sang some patriotic songs and presented the ladies of the sewing society with an American flag. East Hampton Middle School In response to local need and the stress the economic climate has placed on the food pantry here in East Hampton, Molly Wirth and Margaux Eckert, eighth-grade students at the East Hampton Middle School, have been collecting food for the East Hampton Food Pantry. The drive has been quite successful and was recently aided by a tremendous act of selflessness and charity on the part of one John Marshall Elementary School student. For his birthday celebration, Jay Bay, a second grader, asked his friends and family to bring food to donate to the food pantry rather than other types of gifts. His guests responded overwhelmingly. Ms. Wirth and Ms. Eckert were bowled over by this act of generosity. The food was delivered to the middle school and then picked up by the pantry. Jay has demonstrated how one person’s sacrifice can benefit the many. The East Hampton Middle School first period eighth-grade boy physical education class, taught by Mr. Sokolowski, recently completed a pickleball tournament. Pickleball is a modified indoor racquet sport played over a low net. The tournament results were first place, Thomas King and Jean Carlo Barrientos second place, Erick Guerrero and Wen Jun Henl and in third, Reese Donaldson and and Jamie Wolf. Stella Maris Regional School
Fourth grade loves celebrating the lesser known “special days.” They recently prepared a presentation for their nursery school reading buddies to celebrate Mother Goose Day. In addition to the traditional rhymes they then presented their own “fractured” version of the tale. The students made great use of their thesaurus and changed the traditional into a twenty-first century version of the rhyme. Soon after they made a special treat to celebrate chocolate chip day. The students followed directions, used their math skills to measure, and used their taste buds to enjoy their endeavors.
