Johnson atop the golf world

Associated Press Zach Johnson successfully defended his Texas Open title, winning a sudden-death playoff with an unlikely contender.
Seven months after his first victory at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, Johnson beat James Driscoll with a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole after a final-round shootout in which seven players stood within a stroke of the lead with four holes left. “I feel very lucky,” said Johnson, who followed his third-round 60 with a 70. The 2007 Masters champion earned $1,098,000 for his sixth career PGA Tour win, and he vaulted to the top of the FedEx Cup standings, passing Geoff Ogilvy and Phil Mickelson. Driscoll, eight strokes behind to start the day, shot a 62 to match Johnson at 15-under-par 265. Paul Goydos had a one-stroke lead with two holes to play, but closed with two bogeys for a 69, leaving him a stroke back along with Bill Haas (65), who birdied five of six holes on Nos. 11 through 16 but missed a 6-foot putt on the par-3 17th. OH WINS SYBASE: South Korea’s Ji Young Oh won the Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J., for her second career LPGA Tour title, finishing with a 2-under 70 for a four-stroke victory over Norway’s Suzann Pettersen. Oh, 20, began the round tied with Pettersen and three ahead of Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer, who finished six back. STERLING DEBUT: Irish amateur Shane Lowry won the Irish Open in Baltray in his first PGA European Tour start, beating England’s Robert Rock with a par on the third hole of a playoff at County Louth. The 22-year-old Lowry became just the third amateur to win on the tour.
REIGNING IN THE RAIN: Keith Fergus won the rain-shortened Regions Charity Classic in Hoover, Ala., shooting his second straight 6-under 66 for a three-stroke victory over Gene Jones, who also shot 66. Fergus waited out the second long rain delay in two days, then finished the second round in steady drizzle for his second Champions Tour win of the year.
