May 11, 2009 More than 50 golfers took on Whistling Straits Golf Course in the second annual UW-Sheboygan Foundation Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Outing on
Wednesday, May 6. Foursomes representing several area businesses, as well as individual golf enthusiasts, supported the event, which raised money to support annual scholarship awards to UW-Sheboygan students. Top honors on the challenging 72-par Irish course went to the team of Dr. Tom Ries, Dr. Ike Dyksterhouse, Dr. Mark Lang and Ben Cleveland, who submitted a Best Ball score of 72 (even). Second-place honors with a score of 74, went to the team of Christine Monachos, Corey Hardersen, Leon Monachos and Reece Pagel, all of Illinois. The Longest Drive Competition on Hole 14 on the Irish Course went to Pagel. Each year, a portion of the funds raised from this event is used to create two scholarships that are presented to two new incoming freshmen to the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus. For the 2009-10 academic year, two $1,000 scholarships were presented to Kathryn Vliestra of Elkhart Lake and Nicole Lammers of Oostburg. Funds from this year’s event will support the two scholarships to be awarded next spring for the 2010-11 academic year. Matthew Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls won his age division at the Future Collegians World Tour event at Whistling Straits the first weekend in May.
Competing in the age 11-12 division, Bachmann shot an 88 on Saturday and 81 on Sunday to tie for first. He won a playoff (No. 10 on the Irish Course) for the title.
