The Post-Crescent • February 19, 2009 APPLETON &mdash The third annual First Book Fox Valley bowl-a-thon to raise money to provide books to local
children is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the SuperBowl, 2222 E. Northland Ave. Individuals may bowl for a minimum pledge of $10 and teams of families or friends can bowl together for a minimum of $45. The top pledge collector will receive a Badger Sports Park Family Package. First Book is a nonprofit organization, based in Washington, D.C., that aims to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Founded locally in 2005, First Book Fox Valley currently distributes 594 books to students participating in 21st Century Afterschool Learning Center programs at Appleton’s Lincoln, Horizons, Columbus and Foster elementary schools and to preschool programs at Project Bridges, the Salvation Army and Little Angels in Appleton. Books are distributed to students monthly during the school year, and read aloud by community volunteers or program staff. First Book Fox Valley will begin serving preschool children at several of Appleton’s Title I elementary schools next fall.
In addition to bowling, Saturday’s event will include a bake sale, a silent auction and raffles for prizes. No preregistration is required for the bowl-a-thon. Further information is available by calling Scott Peeples at 920-832-4393.
