In 2008, more than 100,000 people were injured or died as the result of a motorcycle accident (NHTSA, 2008). Last year, the family of Michael Garron learned the harsh reality of this fact when Michael swerved to avoid a deer that ran into his path while riding his motorcycle in the Pocono Mountains. Despite wearing a helmet, Garron, 45, sustained a head injury and died several hours later. On September 12, 2009, the Garron family will “ride for Michael” during A Ride to Remember, a benefit motorcycle event being organized in the name of Michael to raise money for local cancer patients. “While we are organizing this event in remembrance of my brother, we know that our family is not alone,” says Michael’s sister, Laurie Brogan. “Whether it be from cancer or a motorcycle accident, people die every day, leaving loved ones behind. We want A Ride to Remember to be a personal event for everyone. It’s a ride for Michael, but also a ride for your sister, your brother, your father, your mother, your friend. You fill in the blank.” A Ride to Remember Motorcycle Charity Event will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Polish American Citizen’s Club, Dupont, PA. The event features a 40-mile scenic ride through the Pocono Mountains, food and live entertainment (The Dawgs and E & W Productions). Registration begins at 10 a.m. with kickstands up at 12:00 noon. For more information on “A Ride to Remember”, the public can call (570) 406-5127. All proceeds from A Ride to Remember will go to Miles for Michael of the Luzerne Foundation (not affiliated with Michael Garron). This is a local charity that provides financial support for unexpected expenses incurred by families of cancer patients throughout Northeastern, PA. A native of Suscon Road (Pittston Twp., PA), Michael loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisher, hunter, and motorcycle enthusiast who loved spending time with his daughter, Laura. Michael passed away on August 27, 2008, as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. The week following his death, members of the Garron family participated in A Ride for Cathy, a benefit motorcycle ride that Michael and other local riders had helped organize to raise money for a local woman suffering from kidney failure. The event, initially intended to be a “happy” day, became a memorial to Michael. More than 100 local motorcycle riders came out in the pouring rain to drive the 40-mile trek through the Pocono Mountains. Ironically, the ride passed the very spot where their friend had lost his life just days before. The bikes silenced their motors for a moment, while family members placed a wreath at the site. Inspired by the support and with the framework for the event already in place, the Garron family formed a committee to continue the tradition.
