Nancy Engel • Reader Submitted • August 26, 2009 Warner Home Video has been celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of OZ all
year with a grand Wizard of Oz Hot Air Balloon Tour traveling across the United States from Los Angeles to New York visiting cities and hot air balloon festivals as they go to celebrate the anniversary of the film and the newly remastered Ultimate Collector’s Edition of the film on Blu-ray and DVD. The balloon, made by Cameron balloons of Ann Arbor, MI, and flown by Marsha Treacy of AeroSports, Inc., is Emerald City Green and is encircled with the Yellow Brick Road. It stands over 75 feet tall, is 55 feet in diameter and holds 90,000 cubic feet of air. The OZ balloon also carries the 70th anniversary logo that includes Dorothy’s Ruby Red Slippers, which are size 8 and a half feet long! Another side of the balloon has a largerthan-life image of the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion and Toto. The famous movie characters stand nearly 30-foot tall and seem to be skipping off the side of this beautiful balloon. Warner Brothers yearlong celebration ends in September with a huge charity event at Tavern on the Green in New York, where the balloon will be shown in all its glory. The release of the 70th Anniversary DVD set is planned for September 29th and will include a gift set as well. Your celebrational viewing of the balloon can take place during one of the seven scheduled flights at the US National Hot Air Balloon Championship, held August 26-30, 2009 at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan. While not competing for the championship the balloon will fly with the fiesta balloons during each scheduled flight and you can get up close and personal with it during the two balloon glows scheduled on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:30pm.
