The event is the brainchild of Total Blue Sports member Gene Slater.
Last year, Gene functioned as tournament director, and worked closely with Steve Comer and Kevin Long of The Jason Long Foundation to put together the inaugural event in less than six weeks. Although the tournament will be held in a magnificent, exclusive setting with lots of nice prizes and wonderful meals, the greatest draw is definitely the BYU sports legends and celebrities that attend. Last year Reno Mahe hosted an episode of Cougar Diaries from the links while playing in this tournament. Other former NFL and BYU greats such as Cameron Jensen, Dustin Johnston, James Dye and Johnny Harline, just to name a few, were also present last year to golf and mingle with participants. This year will include many former football stars, as well as adding some current and former basketball players to the mix. The 2009 Jason Long Memorial Tournament Director is Kevin Motto of Lindon, Utah. Kevin is being assisted by a committee of a dozen volunteers. This year the group has been planning since January for the event. Jason Long was an all-state safety at Lone Peak High School, and graduated the same year as former Lone Peak standout and current BYU basketball star Jackson Emery. The two were close friends and had planned to continue their athletic careers together at BYU. Jason left immediately after high school to serve a mission in Pennsylvania. While on his mission he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. The illness took his life one year later. This annual tournament is held in his honor.
