Lightning Fan Fest to benefit fund for fallen officers family

TBO.com The Tampa Bay Lighting announced Saturday that proceeds from a charity hockey game to be held at Fan Fest next week will benefit a memorial fund for Tampa Police Cpl Mike Roberts, who died Wednesday. Roberts was shot and killed during a confrontation with a homeless man, Humberto Delgado, police say. Roberts, who received 33 commendations as a police officer, leaves a wife and 3-year-old son. The game, which will feature Lightning players Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, Mattias Ohlund, Victor Hedman, Matt Walker, Andrej Meszaros and Adam Hall, will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Aug. 29. Friends of Roberts also will play in the game. An auction of players’ jerseys and memorabilia and direct donations made during Fan Fest also will feed the memorial fund.
Lightning Fan Fest 2009 is from 3 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa, and is free to the public. The event features youth clinics, fan activities, public skating, the first chance for fans to purchase single game tickets, food and drink discounts and more.
