Madonna has been successful in a campaign for the freedom of two gay prisoners in Malawi, Africa.
Homosexuality is illegal in the country and the couple were sentenced to 14 years for ‘gross indecency and unnatural acts’.
Madonna pleaded for people to sign a petition calling for their release, and on Saturday they were freed by the President of Malawi on humanitarian grounds.
‘With incredible joy, I am writing to share with you that Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered their release… Though they are free from prison, sadly their safety and future in Malawi is still unknown. I hope this is just the beginning of our work together,’ Madonna wrote in her blog about the campaign.
