Friday, 21 August 2009 THE Tyne will flow yellow at Hexham on Friday when a monster flotilla of plastic ducks takes to the water.
The colourful canards will carry the hopes of 2,000 Tynedale hopefuls, for the first to cross the finish line on Tyne Green will be worth £250 to its lucky ‘owner’. A further £300 in prizes is also up for grabs in the race, organised by the rugby charity, the Wooden Spoon Society. The event has been organised by one of Tynedale’s leading rugby families, the Gledsons from Wark. Former Hexham Queen Elizabeth High School first XV skipper Richie Gledson is taking the lead, with considerable assistance from his dad, Tynedale legend Alan, and his mother Margery. The Wooden Spoon charity began on the rugby field in 1983, and has grown into one of the country’s fastest growing charities.
