The Road Home

The Road Home

The Fit Chick and her husband will spend some time riding apart in early 2009.

But come summer, the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer will bring them together again. Honestly, I’m a little wary of charity rides. We once did an AIDS ride where a paltry 15 percent of what we raised actually made it to the cause. That stung for a long time. But my father has had cancer and I’ve watched too many people lose their battles to this disease over the years. Plus it’s the real deal. We sleep on church floors and in high school gymnasiums and find good-hearted organizations like local VFWs to feed us along the way. Nearly everything we need is donated, so nearly every penny of what we raise goes straight to important things like buying wigs for women undergoing chemo and sending terminally ill children to Disney World. The ride never fails to restore my faith in humanity as we’re touched by the generosity of so many people on our journey. This will be our fourth time on the ride. Aside from benefiting a couple of truly great causes, it’ll be a lot like coming home.
