Twitter Users Unite For Cause 2009: Handful Greater

Twitter users unite for cause

A handful of Greater Lafayette residents gathered Thursday evening in an effort to clean up the world’s water.
The Twestival, a charity event organized by the social networking service Twitter, took place at Local Mountain Coffee at Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium. The idea for the Twestival first came to life in September when a group of Twitter users based in London decided to organize an event where the Twitter community could help those in need while socializing offline. They decided to support Charity: Water, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Each Twestival participant purchased a ticket ranging from $5 to $50, and all proceeds went to Charity: Water. Along with London and Lafayette, other participating cities included New York Cape Town, South Africa and Shanghai, China. Nelu Lazar, the organizer of the Lafayette Twestival, said the global fundraiser is predicted to raise $1 million in one month.
Lazar believes that by rallying together globally for a single aim, supporters can provide some relief for those in need.
