August 20, 2009 Last week Kirk and I flew up to Townsville to participate in the first 3 days of the XXXX Gold Queensland
Variety Bash, Australia’s premier charity motoring event. This year marks the event’s 20th anniversary and it claims to be the biggest, brashest and most challenging Bash ever! Especially for me, the “virgin basher”. The first ever bash was put together by Dick Smith in 1990 as the inaugural motoring fundraiser for Variety. This year the 3500km track started in the tropical City of Townsville, the home of the famous Strand and travels west over the Queensland border into Northern Territory over 10 action packed days. Drivers and crews are drawn from all walks of life, these enthusiasts come together on the Bash to drive along rough outback roads and bribe and cheat their way past the officials! We were “Virgin Bashers” and all virgins were made to wear a red flashing light around their neck to clearly identify the fact.
