MLB off days are for rest and recoup.
The Red Sox will welcome both today, but are more likely recovering from hangovers than from a brutal stretch of baseball. And had I not been herded upstairs with the other media moo-cows, I would have been the first to raise a glass and say slàinte to the Sox. The club went 7-3 at Fenway with the final home series against the Jays featuring some of the best baseball they’ve played in August. Friday the Sox proved they can play comeback ball. Beckett’s third straight struggle was a surprise, but Jason Bay’s two run dinger tied up the game and made the hurler’s five innings and five earned runs a non-issue. The go-ahead run was yet another surprise as it came off the bat of Casey Kotchman. Pinch hitting in the eighth for Alex Gonzalez, Kotchman’s RBI was the kind of play that inspired fresh rounds of beer as well as exclamations like, “Hey that guy’s still on the team Good for him!” in bars all over Boston. Jackpot.
