Thanksgiving is an annual holiday in the United States that happens on the fourth Thursday of November. A holiday usually celebrated with family and friends, food is aplenty during this day, with turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, filling the table. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for everyone. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 34 million people, 9 million of which are children, are food insecure. These people have a hard time affording food and so they turn to food banks and community programs to fill their stomachs. One such food bank is the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services who is giving assistance to around 280,000 individuals in Sacramento County. The demand for their services is rising though, and so to help with their resources, they’ll be having their annual fundraising event, Run to Feed the Hungry, on November 23 at East Sacramento. Dubbed as the “largest Thanksgiving fun run in the country,” all proceeds from the event “will be used to feed the nearly 1 in 5 Sacramentans who are at risk of hunger.”

Location
The event features a loop course that starts on J Street just west of the entrance to the Sacramento State campus and runs through the beautiful tree-lined streets of East Sacramento.
There’s a Japanese proverb that goes, “Happiness rarely keeps company with an empty stomach.” This Thanksgiving, spread happiness by helping feed the thousands of Sacramentans who are hungry. Register for the run here now.
