Friday, 28 August 2009 A CHARITY ploughing match planned for bank holiday Monday has had a last-minute change of venue.
Organisers of the annual event – in aid of the village’s First Responders team – were due to host it at Mealo House Farm in Allonby. But the landowner has struggled to harvest barley crops in time for the big event – prompting the change of venue. It is the third time Ian Tordiff, of Carlisle, Gordon Wilson, of Silloth, and Willie Pollack, of Penrith have organised the annual charity event. The trio launched the ploughing match in 2007 in memory of their friends – Peter Yates and William Williamson, both from the Solway area – who were lost at sea. It was such a success that they decided to repeat it last year, raising a further £1,500 for Hospice at Home branches. Now, for 2009, the friends have chosen to support the Allonby First Responders and hope to help raise enough money to buy a heart-starting defibrillator machine. Spectators can also browse car boot stalls and enjoy horse and carriage rides.
The new site is just off the main Maryport to Silloth road and will be well sign-posted. To enter contact either Mr Tordiff on 07732 619819 or Mr Pollack on 016974 734415.
