FRIENDS and family of a Flintshire man who died after a battle with cancer are gearing up for the fourth charity football match and
fun day in his honour. Chris Parker, from Buckley, Flintshire, was diagnosed with cancer in October, 2004, and despite intensive treatment, died in August 2005, aged just 36. Event organiser Lorraine Cooper said the match and fun day, which have been held every year since Chris’ death, were a way to commemorate a man she called her best friend. “The day is all about Chris,” said Lorraine, 31, from Drury. “Our group of friends all used to hang out in the Cross Keys pub so it’s a chance for us to all get together again and take a moment to think of him.” The two charity events will raise funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Backford, Chester, and for MacMillan Nurses, who provided care and support to Chris and his family during his treatment. Lorraine added: “We really wanted to hold the day for Chris, but also for the people who helped him in his last days. “It all happened quite quickly but the support he had from the hospice and MacMillan was brilliant.” The charity day will kick off at 12.30pm on bank holiday Sunday with a special football match between Cross Key Lads and Buckley Town FC, at the Globe on Globe Way. The match will be followed by a fun day which will be held at the Cross Keys from 2pm, and will include a bouncy castle, hair braiding, golf games and a raffle.
