Matt Weinstein • Staff writer • May 31, 2009 After seeing firsthand how martial arts improved her self-discipline and focus, Kathy Faust has dedicated
her life to teaching these skills and seeing how they benefit others. “One of the cool things about martial arts is that it is something you do for your whole life,” says Faust, the school director and founder of Faust’s USA Karate. “Martial arts every day helps us be focused, be healthy and be disciplined. It really covers a lot of bases.” Since 1986 Faust’s USA Karate has been teaching martial arts in the Fairport community since 1986. USA Karate, at 6780 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, is Fairport’s first and only private martial arts center. It offers karate, tai chi and self-defense programs for adults and children of all ages. “When I was younger I really needed the self-discipline now it helps me stay healthy,” Faust says. “I love that my knees and back are still healthy.” “Our adult students do stuff that so many of their friends can’t even begin to do. We have people in their 60s who can pump out 50 push-ups no problem.” Not only does martial arts benefit many aspects of the older students’ lives, but the younger students thrive as well. According to Faust, 95 percent of her students enrolled in high school or elementary school are on the high honor roll.
