Golf fans can get up close views of their favorite pros this summer while simultaneously supporting local charities.
Liberty National Golf Club, the exclusive links in Jersey City, will host the 2009 Barclays, a PGA tournament formerly known as the Westchester Classic. The tournament serves as the first event of the FedEx Cup. Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Vijay Singh are expected to compete in the tournament. Singh won last year’s Barclays, which was held at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. Passes to The Barclays are available through TICKETS Fore CHARITY, a program that donates 100 percent of ticket proceeds to charity. Purchasers can select the group they want to support, which will receive 75 percent of the ticket proceeds. The final 25 percent will go toward First Tee of Metropolitan New York, which teaches young people life skills through golf. “This is a great opportunity — a real win-win — for those who want to attend The Barclays and for our local nonprofits,” said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy. His Healy Charitable Foundation, Inc. is one of dozens of groups participating in the program. Other charities involved include Hudson Cradle, the Liberty Science Center and The Hoboken Shelter. Tickets through TICKETS Fore CHARITY cost $45 and provide access to the grounds from Aug. 27 through Aug. 30. They can be purchased by visiting www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r027/charity.html or calling (201) 444-5356.
