Soldiers Run A 65 Mile Marathon For Charity 2009: Involved Young

Soldiers run a 65 mile marathon for charity

Get involved A YOUNG Birmingham soldier used to the deserts of Iraq is setting his sights on the Dorset woodlands to raise cash for
charity. Rifleman Daniel Hill, 18, is the youngest of 12 soldiers from 5th Battalion The Rifles who have been training while serving in Iraq to prepare for the Project 65 D-Day Ultra Marathon to mark the 65th anniversary of the Normandy Landings in WWII. A total of 215 soldiers will leave on June 4, from the RAF base at Tarrant Rushton Airfield in Dorset, where the gliders took off from in 1944, and run 65 miles to Pegasus Bridge, near Ouistreham in France. The runners will arrive at 12.16am on June 6, the same time the gliders landed at the start of D-Day. “This run is important to me as it is raising money for military charities,” said Daniel, a bricklayer before joining the Army. “I know I have been lucky on this tour but you watch the news and see how soldiers have needed these charities.
“It’s not a great time to be asking for money but if people can give what they can it would be great. Even if it’s &pound1 it’s bringing us closer to the total.
