One day of celebration can’t possibly contain all that Brooklyn’s got to be proud of, so the 13th Annual Brooklyn Pride Celebration will host
three days worth of events and festivities beginning June 10th. “Brooklyn’s Annual Pride Celebration commemorates the spirit of the Stonewall riots and builds a bridge to Pride for Brooklynites in their own backyard,†says Zully Rolan, chair of Brooklyn Pride. “We strive to bring together the diverse community of Brooklyn through positive images of our own diverse community. We celebrate family, youth, the talent of our community and the heart of our activist. We are you in our everyday lives. The 13th Annual Pride in Brooklyn celebrates Your Rights, Our Rights, Human Rights here at home and internationally.†The “Your Rights, Our Rights, Human Rights†theme is the international theme for 2009. On June 10th there will be an Interfaith Service at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn at 6:30 p.m. A spiritual group comprised of many faiths will come together to a worship service for the LGBT Community. On June 11th, there will be an evening reception co-hosted by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz at Borough Hall. The event will honor local community leaders. But June 13th is the big day! Pride Day 09 at Prospect Park at Bartel-Pritchard Circle (15th Street and Prospect Park West) will: Keep your ears peeled for news about the official After Pride Party. “The fight for Marriage Equality has become the catalyst for renewed activism in our community activism we have not seen since the 1980s,†says Rolan. “Unbelievably, hate crimes against the LGBT community are rising as demonstrated by the cowardly attack and murder in Bushwick, Brooklyn. And we continue to struggle for work place protections in this day and age.â€
