All In A Days Sports 2009: Tournament Postjournal

All In A Days Sports

Early Tournament – The Post-Journal Champions golf tournament was again played in chilly conditions, but that’s because it is always on the Sunday after
Mother’s Day. One year I had a competitor ask why it is played so early in the golf season and I explained it’s about the only weekend I’m free to put it on and it really can’t be any later because of holidays and other tournaments. The next weekend is Memorial Day weekend, so you don’t want a tournament on that Sunday. And after Memorial Day weekend tournament golf in the area begins to roll with the Italian-American Charity Golf Tournament and then member-guest tourneys at the area courses. Also, for 20 years area courses have been gracious enough to play host to the event which involves giving up nearly an hour of tee times on a Sunday morning. Asking them to do it in June or July would really be stretching it. But the main reason it is held early in the year is because it’s a tournament to showcase the men’s scratch club champions from the previous year. So you don’t want to go to far into the new year with the club champs competing. The whole idea for The Post-Journal Champions was based on how most people usually don’t know who the men’s club champ is at their course. That’s often because the club championship tournament ends up being played late in the summer or sometimes into the early fall. Being the club champ is quite an honor, but usually doesn’t get the publicity it deserves. In contrast, there is usually plenty of publicity about the winners of the member-guest tournament, which is a handicap event. – – –
No Concerns About Sleep – A couple of the Stanley Cup playoff games earlier this postseason were afternoon games that went into overtime. It’s a rarity to have an afternoon playoff game, but one that goes to overtime is totally different than a night game that is extended.
