Chief Scores Big For Charity 2009: Opelousas Police

Chief scores big for charity

Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow proved Thursday that he’s still got it when he stepped up to the plate.
His police officers had issued a challenge to Gallow, a member of the UL baseball team from 1982-85. If he hit seven home runs out of 15, they would make a donation to the Boys and Girls Club. He hit 10 over the fence. The challenge they called the Home Run Derby was just the final part of the fundraising effort that was all Gallow’s idea, said Roseanne Mitchell, president of the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Opelousas. “He went out and did this,” Mitchell said. “He got donations from the community.” Gallow and his officers hit the streets and visited businesses and individuals asking for donations. Not all donations have been counted yet, but Gallow estimates that so far, the fundraiser has garnered nearly $7,000. In return, the Opelousas Police Department put on a softball game Saturday in which they played against the jail’s inmates. The police department won.
After the game, the jail’s trustys were supposed to meet with kids from the community.
