SCL women find funds in duds

SCL women find funds in duds Thursday, February 19, 2009 5:52 PM PST “Treasure is where you find it” may well be a motto
for the members of the Special Children’s League. For their fall fund-raiser, they sought out a different venue to raise funds for their treasured charity, United Cerebral Palsy. The treasure trove proved to be almost in their backyard, when they drove to a special sale held at the Ayres Hotel in Hawthorne.“It was one of those events not to be missed. The courtyard resembled a nice European venue,” member Janis Farran said. “The event proved to be a place where you could see old friends and meet new friends.” Despite some lingering ashes from a seasonal fire, the courtyard was resplendent with displays of linens and other fine goods whose vendors donated part of their proceeds to SCL.Janice Igo, who chaired the event with Farran and Joyce Komatsu, said, “We really had a successful raffle.”Among the prizes were coveted tickets to ride in the Goodyear blimp, donated by Ed and Patty Goren. “Irwin and Betty Helford donated four prime seats in the Hollywood Bowl,” Igo said. “We raised more money than last year, which says a lot in a year of economic downturn.”Mary Curtin said, “Everyone likes something to take home. I got a big kick out of what Fredericks of Hollywood put in the swag bag. The hair products and the lace panties were popular.”— Frank Brown
