GIVING BACK 3M’s annual run gives Any Baby Can $30,000 3M named Any Baby Can the beneficiary of its 3M Half Marathon and Relay.
The Jan. 25 event raised $30,000 for the Austin charity, which strives to ensure that children with special needs reach their full potential through education, therapy and family-support services. The 2009 half-marathon, in its 15th year, attracted more than 5,000 entrants. Four area nonprofits get $170,000 from Verizon The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, donated $169,696 to four Central Texas nonprofits: $70,500 to the Texas Computer Education Association, $66,000 to Southwestern University, $24,000 to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and $9,196 to SafePlace.
The grants will train teachers on the use of Verizon’s free educational resource Web site, Thinkfinity.org, provide educational materials in recorded and computerized formats for students with learning disabilities, help fund a Southwestern University internship allowing students to volunteer for domestic violence assistance organizations and provide computers for SafePlace.
