Charity Basketball Game Set For Friday 2009: Pastor Cornell

Charity basketball game set for Friday

Pastor Cornell Maltbia said the Power 92 Jammers will play the Conway Fire Department.
All proceeds will benefit the Pine Street Community Back to School Backpack Program. “Every year, they give low-income minority students an opportunity to get school supplies. They give haircuts they have motivational speakers they feed them a good meal,” Maltbia said. At 6 p.m., the Conway Fire Department will hold its Crawl, Drag and Squirt competition for elementary school students. Winners of every division will go on to compete for prizes at Toad Suck Daze, Maltbia said. Tickets to the game are $3 for ages 11 and under and $5 for ages 12 and up. They may be purchased at the church, Stoby’s, the central fire station or at the door. Fire Chief Bart Castleberry said, “It is for a great cause. John Skinner is heading up the team for the fire department. They’re looking forward to having a great time. We’re going to do the kids’ competition before the game. Anyone who has kids in elementary school is welcome to bring them to participate.” Buzz Bolding, athletic director at Conway High School, said, “That’s a good cause for kids that need some help, and we’re just glad we’re able to help.” Tim Ester coordinates the backpack program. He and his wife own some investment property in the Pine Street area and passed out about 50 backpacks the first year. Last year, they discovered the Pine Street Development Corporation was doing a similar program and joined forces. Ester said 300 children were served last year, and he expects a bigger crowd this year. The event will be held a week or so before school starts.
He said a meal and haircuts will be provided again this year. He would like to have mentors, such as teachers, coaches and business people, to visit with the students. Anyone who would like to volunteer or donate may reach him at 472-5084, he said.
