A LEADING cancer charity wants to bring one of the biggest fundraising events in the world to Gwynedd.
Relay for Life brings together the whole community in a 24-hour festival of hope and remembrance to celebrate the strides being made to beat cancer and to raise funds to conquer the disease. The event starts with an opening lap of honour by cancer survivors, followed by teams of people from all sections of the community taking turns to walk, run, skip or crawl around the track in relay. At midnight the atmosphere quietens at the candle of hope ceremony &ndash the most poignant part of Relay for Life begins, where participants remember those who have lost their loves to the disease. The first ever relay took place in 1985 in the US and has since spread to 20 countries across the globe. Organising one can be an incredibly rewarding experience and a committed volunteer chairman is tasked with bringing together members of the local community to create a fun, emotional and energetic event. The charity wants people from all walks of life locally to sign up. Comprehensive training and support will be given.
“Being an organising chair for Relay for Life is hard work and requires passion and commitment, but the sense of achievement is simply awesome.”
