Churches hold Black History events

A service of narrations and singing of Negro Spirituals will be among the highlights as Black History Month is celebrated around the area.
Mt. Zion AME Church, 601 Washington St., Hastings, will be the setting for the program at 7 p.m. Saturday, when the Negro spirituals will be included along with excerpts from the literary works of Gertie Laws. The Rev. Lorenzo Laws is Mt. Zion pastor. This musical celebration of African American History is coordinated by Carol Holtz. All are invited. Call 692-1710 for information. Other black history programs include: Fort Mose Historic State Park, U.S. 1 North, will have re-enactors in period clothing telling the story of Fort Mose during “Flight to Freedom” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The St. Augustine Garrison will perform a colonial Spanish military drill and provide demonstrations of musket and cannon firings. Regular park admission fees apply. Call 823-2232 for information.
Greater St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church, 69 Washington St., will have its Black History Month celebration at 4 p.m. Sunday. The theme is “Making Civil Rights Right: From Dreams to Reality.”
