The Los Angeles Galaxy expects to know by tomorrow whether David Beckham will return to the team next month or remain with AC Milan.
“We think it’s best to come to a conclusion either David is going to stay (with the Galaxy) or remain at AC Milan,†Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said yesterday after Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber gave the Italian club a deadline to work out a transfer deal for Beckham. “In order for our team to move forward, our league to move forward, it’s best that we get a decision as soon as possible.†The league owns the contract of the 33-year-old midfielder. Scott Niedermayer scored his second goal of the game 55 seconds into overtime, Brendan Morrison got the tying goal early in the third period, and the Anaheim Ducks rallied twice to beat the visiting Calgary Flames 3-2.  In New York, Mike Green scored twice to tie the NHL record for defenseman with goals in seven straight games, but the Washington Capitals lost to the Rangers 5-4 in a shootout. Green tied the record set by Boston’s Mike O’Connell in 1983-84. A record $124 million was raised for charity by the PGA Tour and its tournaments last year despite the global financial crisis, tour officials announced.  The LPGA Tour has signed a 10-year agreement with the Golf Channel. Oklahoma State wide receiver Bo Bowling was suspended from the team after he was arrested on felony drug charges including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled substance.  Pro golfer Jim Thorpe was charged with failing to pay $1.6 million in federal taxes. His attorney says his client will plead not guilty.  Hockey great Guy Lafleur was ordered in Montreal to stand trial in April on a charge of obstruction of justice. Lafleur was charged last year after he testified during son Mark’s bail hearing on various charges, agreeing to supervise his son and ensure he abided by a court-ordered curfew. It was later revealed the elder Lafleur drove his son to a hotel to spend time with a girlfriend. Top-seeded Rafael Nadal rallied from a set down to beat Simone Bolelli of Italy 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and advance to the second round at the ABN Amro in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Mikhail Youzhny of Russia upset sixth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.  Top-ranked Serena Williams defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4 to move into the second round of the Open GDF Suez in Paris. Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva, Agnieszka Radwanska, Patty Schnyder and Amelie Mauresmo also won.  Tommy Haas of Germany beat Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-2, 7-5, and four-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic beat Australia’s Chris Guccione 6-2, 7-6 in the second round at the San Jose Open.
Bode Miller said in an interview with UniversalSports.com that he’s leaning toward retiring at the end of this season, but hasn’t completely ruled out the 2010 Vancouver Games.
