ADRENALINE junkies took fundraising to a new height, comic crazed fans got creative, while model engineers let off a bit of steam over the
May Day bank holiday weekend. Last year more than 150 fans of the Japanese comic art attended Scunthorpe’s first Manga ReCon event at the Central Library. And this weekend youngsters were flocking to the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, to create costumes for this year’s Manga ReCon, which will take place at the Central Library on Thursday. As well as giving young people the opportunity to design and make suitable outfits for the forthcoming event, there was also a Mini Manga workshop, where younger visitors could create their very own Manga character. Six-year-old Gabrielle Marshall from Crowle really enjoyed making ‘a scary girl’ sculpture. For aficionados of steam traction, the Model Engineers’ Festival at Normanby Hall on Saturday proved an irresistible attraction. There was a large array of working steam vehicles on display, all painstakingly constructed by their engineer owners.
Meanwhile, across town, thrill-seeking was the name of the game at the Warren Lodge charity fun day with steely-nerved customers flinging themselves out of a cage at the top of a 200 foot-high crane.
