Drive Blindfolded For Guide Dogs 2009: Involved Blind

Drive blindfolded for guide dogs

Get involved BLIND and sighted volunteers are needed for a unique driving experience to raise money for charity.
Guide Dogs for the Blind has organised the Blind Drive event, due to take place on September 6 at Llandow race circuit in Cowbridge from 10.30am to 5pm. Designed to give blind and partially-sighted people the experience of racing a car, sighted people will drive the same circuit blindfolded. All participants will be with a driving instructor in a dual-controlled vehicle, and for sighted drivers there will be an Aston Martin DB9 to race with a professional instructor for &pound30 for three circuits. Relay teams of three can also take part in a team challenge, where they are timed to drive blind through a slalom course. The winners will receive a trophy and champagne. Radio 2’s Lynn Bowles will open the event which hopes to raise a minimum of &pound10,000, with each participant being asked for a &pound50 donation.
Allison Charles, district fundraiser for South Wales, said: “The lifetime cost of a guide dog from birth to retirement is almost &pound50,000, so fun events like the Blind Drive are vitally important.”
