of the race’s organising committee, said at a press conference in Abu Dhabi yesterday. “This year it should be a record amount of people, we expect between 16,000 and 20,000,” he said. “Last year we raised more than $300,000 [Dh1.1 million] for charity and I hope we can beat that this year.” The money is raised through the registration fees, which vary from US$25 to US$40 depending on when a runner signs up for the race. The winner will take home prize money of $7,500, plus a bonus of $20,000 if the event’s record is broken. The race has a “growing reputation” among the international athletic community, Lt Gen al Kaabi said. Runners of all skill levels, from professional athletes to children, can participate in the race, which has a growing following. Ten thousand people competed last year and 8,000 in 2007. The event comes ahead of the Zayed International Marathon, which will take place in Abu Dhabi in January.
