Redlands Shakespeare Festival’s University Lecture Series presents Carey Curtis Smith speaking on “Magic Behind the Scenes: Special Effects and Spectacle of the English Renaissance Theater,” 6:30 p.m. at the Redlands Bowl. Lecture followed by performance of “The Tempest” at 8 p.m. Free. Redlands Shakespeare Festival opens with a performance of “The Tempest,” 8 p.m. at the Redlands Bowl. Performances of “The Tempest,” “Hamlet” and “Measure for Measure” continue in repertory 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through May 24. Performances are free. Festival also includes lectures at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday and Saturday afternoon workshops. Redlands Great Y Circus, “Seasons of Circus,” 7 p.m. in the Redlands YMCA’s Roy Coble Gym. Continues 7 p.m. Friday, May 15, 5 p.m. Saturdays, May 9 and 16, and 3 p.m. Sundays, May 10 and 17.
