Fear of police cost blamed for early start to race

ORGANISERS of the Mumbles raft race have responded to grumblings about the timing of Sunday’s event, which apparently forced some competitors to carry their
contraptions out to the incoming tide. For many people, that detracted from the spectacle because the rafts were a lot further from the crowded prom than in previous years. “Unfortunately, organisers of this year’s race neglected to inform contestants it would start while the tide was out,” said Andrew. “As the countdown to the start progressed, many were forced to lift their rafts and carry them out to the slowly incoming tide. “Spectators without binoculars were unable to see much of the race as rafts moved further from the promenade to find water.” Organiser Garry Tanner said the event would ideally be held in the evening, but he said that would mean forking out for policing costs because of a greater threat of disruption and disorder.
