Feeling A Draft 2009: 15 Years

Feeling a Draft

You can make it 15 years and counting–15 straight NFL Drafts have included at least one BYU player going off the board and onto
an NFL roster. As you know, Sunday saw two Cougars getting their names called: Austin Collie by the Indianapolis Colts in the 4th round, and Fui Vakapuna by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 7th round. A couple of weeks back, I noted that the Sporting News predicted Collie to the Colts, but in the 2nd round. As it turns out, the pick came two rounds later, but right about where Collie expected. I spoke with Austin this morning, and you can hear our conversation by clicking his audio link in the “Cougar Cuts” box to the right. Among the highlighted tidbits you will hear: …Collie will wear 17 with the Colts. …he has already met Peyton Manning–last summer at the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana–but he didn’t get the chance to catch any balls from the future Hall-of-Famer.
…Collie thinks if he had stayed for his senior season at BYU, he would have moved up “a round, maybe a round and-a-half,” at best, if he had waited for the 2010 NFL Draft.
