Finding Her Voice 2009: Im Thankful

Finding her voice

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity because the experience allowed me to see and enjoy and be inspired by a lot of Northern women
in music,” MacDonald said. Ts’eko organizer Mary Caroline invited MacDonald to participate in the festival after securing funding from the NWT Arts Council to cover travel expenses. “She did a really great job,” Caroline said. “People were really impressed. She is a pleasure to work with. We all got a chance to jam together and she was really great on harmonies. I look forward to working with her again.” MacDonald presented her music at two concerts during the four-day women’s music event, which included shows by former Fort Smith rocker, Veronica Johnny, who is now based in Toronto. MacDonald described Johnny as one of her early musical mentors growing up. Johnny said she admires how far MacDonald’s music has come. “She has a beautiful voice,” Johnny said, describing her music as “beautiful and heartfelt.”
Macdonald covers a wide range of songs, from stuff by contemporary pop artists, such Toronto’s Metric, to jazz classics recorded by The California Ramblers almost a century ago.
