Firefighters Going Green For Charities 2009: Local Firefighters

Firefighters going green for charities

LOCAL firefighters are preparing to go green as they gear up for their 24th annual charity plant sale.
Staff at the Andrew Street fire station are now taking applications for this year’s event and are looking for groups that could benefit from their help. The plant sale, which will take place on Saturday, May 30, is a popular event in the town and the money raised will be split between the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and local charities. In the last decade almost &pound40,000 has been raised by East Kilbride Fire Station who have seen people from near and far flock to the charity sale. The event, which attracts hundreds of gardeners every year, will have a wide selection of plants, shrubs and baskets on sale and there will also be a tombola to help boost the total. On the day there will also be an opportunity for members of the public to obtain fire safety advice from the town’s firefighters. Anyone who is involved in, or knows someone in a local group that would benefit from the plant sale fund, are now being encouraged to apply to the fire station in writing.
The only stipulation to qualify for a share of the fund is that the organisation is based in East Kilbride.
