Firefighters On Weeklong Charity Bike Ride 2009: Queensland Firefighters

Firefighters on weeklong charity bike ride

A group of Queensland firefighters is preparing to set off on a week-long bike ride from Rockhampton to Brisbane to raise money for charity.
Thirty-seven Fire and Rescue officers from across the state are getting ready to cycle the 850 kilometres. The officers are hoping to raise about $40,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Unit. Rockhampton fireman Paul Smith says the group is not daunted by the task. “We got a bloke on there, old Rusty, he’s from Rocky, he’s 71 years old this year and he’s still doing it, no dramas,” he said. Karenlee Spillane from the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation says it is the third year the event has being held. “I’m really impressed with anyone who can ride a bike for several hours, let alone days – these people are just amazing,” she said.
The fire officers are due to arrive in Brisbane next Tuesday.
