GOLF NOTEBOOK Sweet brothers ready for next step

BY GARY HAWKINS Staff writer Although they’re still in high school, we’ve been hearing about Zack and Seth Sweet for years.
The brothers from Madison began playing golf shortly after they started walking and have already established themselves as two of the top juniors in the state. Last season, Seth won the Maine junior title for 13-14 year olds, while Zack captured the Lakewood club championship. Both also finished among the top four in the Class C individual high school competition last fall. Seth, 14, and a freshman at Madison Memorial High School, became the youngest golfer ever at age 12 to qualify for the Maine Amateur two years ago. He missed the cut that year but bounced back last summer, shooting a 73 on the second day, to reach the round of 40 and gain an exemption for this year’s Amateur at Martindale. Zack, 17 and a junior at Madison, is also exempt from qualifying for the Amateur by virtue of making the New England junior team last fall. The Amateur is just a small part of an ambitious schedule the brothers plan for this year. “Every spring we go through and set up a calendar for our golf events into November,” Zack said.
The brothers have already played a couple of tournaments on the Challenge Cup Circuit and are preparing for the New England schoolboy tournament June 16 in Keene, N.H. The top four in each class at the Maine individual tournament qualified for the New Englands. Last fall, Seth finished third in Class C and Zack fourth.
