Golf Notebook Women Amateurs Welcome At Events 2009: Women Amateur

Golf Notebook Women amateurs welcome at events

Women amateur golfers who are looking for friendly competition on first-class golf courses while raising money for charity may want to check out Women’s
Golf Charities. The organization’s next event is March 16 at Longwood Golf Club. Other venues on the 2009 schedule include Sienna Plantation Golf Club, BlackHorse Golf Club, Memorial Park Golf Course and Eagle Pointe Golf Club. “It’s an opportunity for ladies to play courses other than their home course, and there’s a lot of camaraderie,” said Peggy Stevens, the organization’s assistant treasurer. “The ladies have a lot of fun when they play. We don’t turn anyone away.” Membership is available for 2009. Women’s Golf Charities also conducts the Greater Houston Women’s City Amateur Championship at Memorial Park, Sept. 21-25 and the city senior amateur, March 31-April 2 at the Golf Club at Cinco Ranch. You do not need to be a member to play those events. Last year, the organization donated $27,500 to area charities. The Marilynn Smith Scholarship will award two scholarships of $3,000 each. The Dinah Shore will award one for $5,000, and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship will award one for $1,250. The Phyllis G. Meekins scholarship will be awarded to a young woman from a recognized minority, and is need-based. For information and application forms, visit lpgafoundation.org or LPGA.com, and on the bottom menu bar, click on LPGA Foundation. The deadline for all three is May 15.
Representatives from the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School will be at Houston National Golf Club, March 3-7. Each six-hour clinic (three-hour putting session and three-hour wedge session) will be taught by instructors from the Pelz school.
