Golfing With A Purpose 2009: Golfers Bedford

Golfing With a Purpose

For the golfers at Bedford Hills in Coitsville, Sunday morning was all about helping the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
This is the fifth year in a row that Union 385 from The National Association of Letter Carriers out of Youngstown has held the Chubby DiGiacomo Memorial Golf Outing. Twenty eight teams, or 112 golfers, participated. The event is named after the union’s former president of 20 years and raises thousands of dollars for the MDA. “Last year we raised over $5,250. This year, we’re going to try and surpass that and with a little help and a little luck, we will,” said John Fire of the NALC. Less than three miles away at the Knoll Run Golf Course in Lowellville, golfers were also raising money for charity. Knoll Run donated $5 from each golfer to the United Way of the Mahoning Valley. “There’s a lot of ways people can come out and do things, but to spend a day golfing and just hanging out with your friends helping a good cause like the United Way is the best way in the world to do it,” said Jim Marucci.
That’s something everyone seems to agree on. “And it’s a fun way. People can be interactive and we have lots of stops where people can give money and they can donate. So, it’s a great opportunity for people to get out and have fun, but help a good cause,” said Bolin.
