Saturday, 09 May 2009 A GRANDAD from Carlisle is gearing up to cycle 300km (186 miles) in one night to raise cash for a
cancer charity. Ian Grey, 56, of St James Road, Denton Holme, is usually seen inspecting dairy farms in the county or kayaking on Cumbria’s lakes but on June 12 he will mount his bike in Sweden to cycle around Lake Vattern. Ian said: “Like most people, I’ve ridden a bike in the past but this is my first time on a trip like this. The Vatternrunden sounds like a fantastic night out. “More than 18,000 riders set off in groups of 50 to circumnavigate the lake. I start just after 8pm, so I will get to see the sunset and sunrise with a lot of miles in between. “The organisers allow 24 hours to complete the event but I hope to get round in about 15 hours.†Ian is currently squeezing in as much training as possible.
He said: “There can’t be many families who haven’t been touched by cancer but not everyone realises that exercise is a great way to aid rehabilitation.â€
